The New Balance GPS Trainer provides accurate GPS measurements and can also link to a heart rate monitor. The best part is that it also functions as a normal watch and so, you don’t have to take it off after running. If you are new to running watches and skeptic about dishing out several hundred dollars on a Garmin, the New Balance GPS Trainer with its $150 price tag may be a good starter watch.

The New Balance Trinity
New Balance has built its GPS running watch with three components: a heart rate monitor, a GPS watch, and a computer software for analyzing your performance. The heart rate monitor’s measurements are accurate. The watch allows you to set alerts for heart rate zone activities. The GPS measures speed, pace, lap and interval distance. Many other running watches rely on external sensors to calculate pace and distance but this one does just fine with the GPS. It uses the GPS data to set targets and calculate intervals and laps for you. The software is basic but tracks your performance over a long period of time effectively. It also allows you to see date, day, and time, making it a good regular watch in addition to a running watch.
With the GPS running, the battery drains in about 12 hours. Here’s the bad: no BlueTooth, no wifi, and no compatibility with fitness apps. It charges and syncs your data to its software through a USB and hence, the lack of Bluetooth and wifi doesn’t bite much but you are seriously going to be missing a lot of action without fitness apps like Strava and RunKeeper. Users report that the New Balance NX980’s water resistance is better than several high-end watches.
